Tanzania, Dar es Salaam
Overview

Tanzania, Dar es SalaamDar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is the country's richest city and a regionally important economic centre. About one half of Tanzania's manufacturing employment is located in the city despite the fact that Dar holds only ten percent of Tanzania's population.

Tanzania is in Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean, between Kenya and Mozambique. The climate varies from tropical along the coast to temperate in the highlands.

The official languages are Kiswahili and English. English is understood at business and official levels but is not spoken as well as in other parts of East Africa. Professional Tanzanians understand English, but many write and express themselves poorly. English is associated with the upper classes and government services. Kiswahili is more widespread, including the local media. A few basic phrases of Swahili are invaluable in business circles and Tanzanians show great appreciation if visitors learn a few words. Arabic is spoken on the island of Zanzibar. The main religions are Christianity and Islam.

The economy of Tanzania is mostly based on agriculture, which accounts for more than half of the GDP, provides approximately 85% of exports, and employs approximately 80% of the workforce.

Expatriate business dress is generally suits and ties for men and suits or dresses for women.

The security risk for expatriates in Tanzania is medium. Risks include petty crime, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and the latent risk of terrorism.

The currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US Dollars are also widely accepted. ATMs are available at banks in most urban areas but are not always reliable.

Medical facilities are generally below international standards, especially outside Dar es Salaam. Sleeping sickness, cholera and rift valley fever occur. Malaria and dengue fever are common.

The population of Dar es Salaam is 4.4 Million (2016 est.), while the inflation rate is 5.2% (July 2017).
