Overview

Moldova, ChisinauChisinau is the capital and largest municipality of Moldova. Chisinau is the main industrial and commercial centre and is located in the middle of the country.

Moldova is in Eastern Europe, northeast of Romania. The climate is moderate in winter and warm in summer.

The official language is Romanian (also referred to as Moldovan). Russian is the main language spoken in the breakaway eastern region of Transnistria. Visitors who are unfamiliar with any of the two languages should hire a guide or keep a pocket dictionary. The main religion is Christianity.

The economy of Moldova enjoys a favourable climate and good farmland but has no major mineral deposits. As a result, the economy depends heavily on agriculture, featuring fruits, vegetables, wine, and tobacco. The economy contracted dramatically following the fall of the Soviet Union. Currently, Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe.

Moldovans are proud of their folk art and music. Business meetings are generally conducted in a formal manner. Expatriate business dress is formal.

The security risk for expatriates in Moldova is low to medium. Risks include petty and street crime, and poor infrastructure.

The currency of Moldova is the Moldovan Leu (MDL). The economy is mainly cash based. Payment by card is limited. There have been incidences of credit card fraud and fraud involving ATMs.

Medical facilities are generally below international standards and English is not widely spoken.

The population of Chisinau is 492,000 (2016 est.), while the inflation rate is 7.3% (July 2017).
