Overview

Martinique, All AreasMartinique is an island between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and Tobago. The climate is subtropical with moderately high humidity, tempered by trade winds, and is vulnerable to devastating cyclones (hurricanes).

The official language is French. Creole is also spoken while English is spoken at major hotels, restaurants and tourist organisations. The main religion is Christianity.

The economy is based on trade. Agriculture accounts for about 6% of GDP and the small industrial sector for 11%. Tourism has become more important than agricultural exports as a source of foreign exchange. The majority of the work force is employed in the service sector and in administration.

Martiniquais are very formal. Business culture is French influenced. Business is mostly conducted in French. Expatriate business dress is formal and lightweight suits are recommended.

The security risk for expatriates in Martinique is low. Risks include low levels of petty and opportunistic, street crime, with rare incidents of violent crime. Other risks include driving on challenging roads, as well as hurricanes and tropical storms.

The currency of Martinique is the Euro (EUR).

Medical facilities are generally very good. Most specialist treatment is available. Cases of Zika virus and Chikungunya virus have been reported. Dengue fever is common.

The population of Martinique is 385,600 (2018 est.), while the inflation rate (CPI) is 1.2% for Martinique as at March 2017.
