Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Overview

Luxembourg, LuxembourgThe city of Luxembourg, also known as Luxembourg City, is a commune with city status, and the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Luxembourg City is one of the wealthiest cities in the world, having developed into a banking and administrative centre. Luxembourg is a seat of several institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, and the European Investment Bank.

Luxembourg is in Western Europe, between France and Germany. The climate is modified continental with mild winters and cool summers.

The official languages are French, German and Luxembourgish or Letzebuergesch, a West Germanic language with considerable borrowings from French. English is also widely spoken. The main religion is Christianity.

The economy of Luxembourg is largely dependent on the banking, steel, and industrial sectors. Although Luxembourg in tourist literature is aptly called the "Green Heart of Europe", its pastoral land coexists with a highly industrialized and export-intensive economy. Luxembourg enjoys a degree of economic prosperity almost unique among industrialized democracies.

Luxembourgeois society is largely tolerant and personnel are unlikely to face discrimination. Business is fairly formal. Use of last names and professional titles is important in Luxembourg. Expatriate business dress is usually a suit and tie for men, and a two-piece suit or equivalent for women.

The security risk for expatriates in Luxembourg is low.

The currency of Luxembourg is the Euro (EUR). Banking is on a par with the rest of Western Europe and North America.

Medical facilities are good, however the cost of treatment for expatriates from outside the EU can be high.

The population of Luxembourg is 563,000 (2016 est.), while the inflation rate is 1.76% (Sept 2017).
