Kazakhstan, Almaty
Overview

Kazakhstan, AlmatyAlmaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan. Almaty is the major commercial centre of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is in Central Asia, northwest of China; a small portion west of the Ural (Zhayyq) River in eastern-most Europe. The climate is continental with cold winters and hot summers. It is arid and semi arid.

The official language is Russian. It is the language used in business. The use of even basic phrases in the Kazakh language by a foreigner is likely to be appreciated. The Cyrillic alphabet is commonly used for public notices such as road signs and street names. English is not widely spoken fluently, but a rapidly increasing number of people have a basic grasp of the language. Interpreters can be hired locally. The main religions are Islam and Christianity.

The economy of Kazakhstan is the largest economy in Central Asia. It possesses enormous fossil fuel reserves as well as minerals and metals. It also has considerable agricultural potential with its vast steppe lands accommodating both livestock and grain production, as well as developed space infrastructure, which took over all launches to the International Space Station from the Space Shuttle. Energy is the leading economic sector which includes the production of crude oil and natural gas condensate.

Business dress is usually conservative, however during the hot summer months, men often remove jackets and ties. Women may be required to wear headscarves in rural areas, which tend to be more conservative.

The security risk for expatriates in Kazakhstan is medium. Risks include petty crime, particularly in Almaty, Aktau and Atyrau, terrorism (typically targeted at government buildings rather than expatriates), and traffic accidents. Expatriates should be cautious not to offend local culture and religious sensitivities with regard to dress and behaviour.

The currency of Kazakhstan is the Kazakhstan Tenge (KZT).

Medical facilities are not generally comparable to those of Western Europe and North America. Haemorrhagic fever and lead pollution has been reported.

The population of Almaty is 1.6 Million (2016 est.), while the inflation rate is 7.1% (July 2017).
