France, Nice
Overview

France, NiceNice is the fifth most populous city in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse. Nice is historically dominated by the tourism industry, climate and landscape are still what attracts most visitors today. Nice is the second-most visited place in France after Paris. It also has the second busiest airport in France after Paris and two convention centres dedicated to business tourism. The city also has a university, several business districts and some major cultural facilities, such as museums, a national theatre, an opera house with a regional library and several concert halls and casinos.

France is in Western Europe, bordering the Bay of Biscay and English Channel, between Belgium and Spain, southeast of the UK; bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Italy and Spain. The climate is generally cool in winter and mild in summer, but with mild winters and hot summers along the Mediterranean.

The official language is French. English is commonly spoken in major cities and in business circles. Visitors, particularly native English speakers, should try to speak at least a few words of French. Do not use the familiar 'tu' form of address unless invited to do so. The main religion is Christianity.

The economy of France is a mixed economy which is the fifth largest economy in the world, by measurement of GDP (nominal), behind the United States, Japan, China and Germany. It is the second largest economy in Europe.

Business in France tends to be on the formal side. It is expected to use formal terms of address such as ‘mademoiselle' for young women, ‘Madame' for other women, ‘monsieur' for men, plus the surname (for example, Madame DuPont). If a professional title is used (for example, ‘monsieur le president'), expatriates should follow the example. France has a conservative business culture, which although is changing, continues to be male dominated, particularly in large domestic companies.

The security risk for expatriates in France is generally low. Risks include petty / street crime in major urban areas, especially in tourist areas, disruptions related to strikes, and particularly in recent years extremist terrorism.

The currency of France is the Euro (EUR). Banking is on a par with the rest of Western Europe and North America. Credit cards are widely accepted.

The standard of healthcare in France is good, however the cost of treatment for expatriates from outside the EU can be high.

The population of Nice is 1 Million (2018 est.), while the inflation rate (CPI) is 2.1% for France as at June 2018.
