Comoros, Moroni

Comoros, MoroniMoroni is the capital and largest city of the Comoros. Moroni has many excellent beaches. Exports include vanilla, cocoa, and coffee.

The Comoros is in Southern Africa. A group of islands at the northern mouth of the Mozambique Channel, about two-thirds of the way between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique. The climate is tropical marine.

The official languages are French and Arabic. Most people speak Comoran, a mix of Arabic and Swahili. The main religion is Islam.

The economy of Comoros with an estimated gross domestic product (GDP) per capita income of about $700, is among the world's poorest and least developed nations. Comoros is made up of three islands that have inadequate transportation links, a young and rapidly increasing population, and few natural resources. The low educational level of the labour force contributes to a subsistence level of economic activity, high unemployment, and a heavy dependence on foreign grants and technical assistance.

In the Comoros business is relatively informal and slow. Expatriate business dress is neat but relatively casual, such as a lightweight suit, and should respect Muslim sensitivities by covering shoulders, chest and knees.

The security risk for expatriates in the Comoros is low, but medium in Anjouan and Moroni. Risks include petty crime such as pickpocketing and mugging, and those related to protests. Other risks include those related to tropical storms as well as volcanic activity.

The currency of the Comoros is the Comoros Franc (KMF). The Comoros is largely a cash based economy. ATMs and banking facilities are limited. Very few hotels accept credit cards. Some hotels and restaurants will accept some foreign currencies such as US Dollars.

Medical facilities are basic and limited on all three islands, and are mostly private. Malaria and cholera are common.

The population of Moroni is 60,000 (2017 est.), while the inflation rate is 1.8% (Dec 2016).
