Overview

Central African Republic, BanguiBangui is the capital of and the largest city in the Central African Republic. Bangui serves as an administrative, trade, and commercial centre.

The Central African Republic is in Central Africa, north of Democratic Republic of the Congo. The climate is tropical with hot, dry winters and mild to hot, wet summers.

The official language is Sango. French is used for administrative and business transactions and is widely spoken. The main religions are Christianity, Islam and indigenous beliefs.

The economy of the CAR is dominated by the cultivation and sale of food crops such as cassava, peanuts, maize, sorghum, millet, sesame, plantain and sara.

Central Africans are general very friendly. Expatriate business dress is formal, comprising suits. In Muslim areas, drinking and smoking are prohibited and dress is more conservative, women are expected to cover their knees and shoulders. Business is generally conducted in French.

The security risk for expatriates in the Central African Republic is high, with almost no government control outside the capital Bangui resulting in a high risk. Risks include robbery and kidnapping by rebels as well as high levels of petty crime.

The currency of the Central African Republic is the CFA Franc BEAC (XAF). There are no international ATM's and credit or debit cards are generally not accepted.

Medical facilities are extremely limited. Serious or complex medical treatment may require evacuation which can be expensive. Cholera is known to occur.

The population of Bangui is 734,000 (2016 est.), while the inflation rate is 38.04% (Feb 2016).
