Expat Cost of Living - Africa 2014
  • Luanda most expensive in Africa and globally
  • Chad biggest mover up rankings
  • Tunis least expensive in Region

Luanda Angola is the most expensive destination for expats in Africa and globally despite the obvious poverty and sprawling slums. This is due to the costly accommodation available to expats where a rented house in a guarded community can cost between US$8 000 and US$12 000 per month, international private schooling up to US$40 000 a year and a cup of coffee almost US$4. Produce is imported for the growing expat community, 1kg of apples can cost US$10, a loaf of white bread US$1.25 and a pair of imported jeans can cost up US$115.

The biggest mover up the city rankings in Africa is N'Djamena which moved from 185th position to 23rd in the world due primarily to a rapid increase in economic growth which jumped to 7.2% in 2012 from just 1.6% in 2011 and is projected have be close to 7.4% for 2013 before increasing further to 11.5% in 2014. The growth is largely oil based with poor infrastructure and little diversification of the economy to date. The economic growth together with a lack of local skills has resulted in a sharp rise in the expat population in the past few years. The cost of maintaining an appropriate expat standard of living is expensive as most goods and services used by expats are imported and in short supply. Appropriate white collar housing supply is low with the resulting tendency for high accommodation expenditure e.g US$4 400 for a three bed apartment in a central location, expensive expatriate imported goods and transportation costs, US$0.98 per liter of gas.

The Nigerian cities of Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Ibadan also place in the top ten, this is due to the continued expansion of the oil industry in the country, causing expat population growth and private investment in accommodation and amenities, substantially increasing prices of these goods and services.
