Expat Cost of Living – Asia Pacific 2014
  • Asia Pacific cities slip down the global rankings
  • Tokyo falls out of the international Top Three
  • Cost of living for Asia Pacific based Expats decreases relative to other regions

Things are looking cautiously better around the world after the economic slump, with Asian cities remaining fairly stable throughout 2013, a large number have become slightly cheaper in global terms due to their weaker local currencies (vs the US dollar). Tokyo is ranked 12th in 2014, down nine places since January 2013 but second most expensive in Asia Pacific.

Hong Kong has reclaimed the title of the most expensive place for expats in Asia Pacific. A kg of Apples will cost US$3.07, a litre of full cream milk US$2.85, regular cappuccino US$4.15, a three bed apartment in a central position approximately US$8 600 per month and US$20 000 for a private international high school.

Singapore is ranked 3rd most expensive in Asia Pacific and 13th globally; this is due to the high demand for expat accommodation and goods, high infrastructure costs, coupled with a strong currency.

Sydney is the 4th most expensive city in Asia Pacific and 17th globally. Australian cities are relatively high in the global expat cost of living rankings primarily due to the sustained strength of the Australian dollar mainly as a result of export demand for Australian resources.
