Africa Cost of Living Rankings

INTRODUCING N’DJAMENA THE MOST EXPENSIVE CITY YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

The capital city of the landlocked central African country of Chad has joined the list of the World’s 20 most expensive cities. The newly released rankings from Xpatulator.com show both N’Djamena and Shanghai, China reached the top 20 for the first time. The rankings measure the cost of living for expat workers.

For N’Djamena and Shanghai, making the top 20 means very different things. Shanghai, a metropolis of 24 million people, has experienced double-digit economic growth in 21 of the last 25 years. It is the home of the World’s busiest container port, 3rd largest stock market by volume and home to most of China’s largest industrial companies. Increasing demand for imported goods and quality accommodation from both native and expat workers has been pushing the cost of living up but foreign workers are attracted by excellent job opportunities and a large community of fellow expats.

By contrast, N’Djamena is the capital of one of the poorest countries in the World. It suffers from almost non-existent infrastructure, chronic shortages of imported goods and regular influxes of refugees from the conflict in the neighboring Central African Republic. Its past experience with foreign investment to develop its oil field’s landed it at the top of another list, as Forbes most corrupt country in 2006.

Moving from 160th place in 2012, N’Djamena passed a handful of Japanese cities and most European capitals on its way to 19th in the Xpatulator.com rankings. The most expensive city in the World and Africa is Luanda, Angola, another developing oil producer on the African continent.
